Late(ish) to this post, but thank you - this is exactly what I am wrestling with in my own head! I found this post via your EA forum post regarding the role of protest movements - something else I'd been pondering.
I love the structure to this with you debating yourself!
I've had similar internal dialogue with myself (with a lot more cussing), and I always land on the idea that we as animal advocates should be doing what our competitive advantage and interests are in. Due to the shear volume of animals killed in animal ag, some of my friends focus on that. Others are more passionate about local issues like horse carriages downtown or a store that sells fur. I'm a computer programmer, so I feel I should be donating my time and ability to anything programming related, even if directly talking to companies about welfare campaigns can have a bigger impact. I just don't see myself being in corporation engagement, while others don't see themselves as computer programmers. While some of us are interested in finding better ways to measure effectiveness. It all goes around and around.
